Truth and Reconciliation Celebration

The event in the south end of our district was well attended. Chief Brent Dixon gave a traditional Welcome to the beautiful territory of Tsq̓éscen̓. Orange Shirt Day founder Phyllis Webstad shared her personal truth with students, helping them understand why we wear orange.

Elders Cheryl Chapman and Mike Retasket shared a song to begin the day in a good way. District Principal of Indigenous Education, Dancing Water Sandy, spoke briefly, encouraging students to greet one another in Secwepemctsín and sharing the history of the song.

Student activities included a walk in solidarity while wearing their orange shirts, watching powwow dancing, and visiting the many guests and learning stations set up to support their learning.
